Creative Approach for E-blast assignment
(SCAD Advertising & Branding Dept. Production Assistant role)
To kick off this e-blast assignment, I started by diving into Sailor Jerry’s website and Instagram to get a real feel for the brand. Right away, it was clear that their identity is all about bold tattoos, spiced rum, and a strong vintage vibe rooted in American counterculture. The visuals, tone, and attitude all pointed to something raw, rebellious, and proudly old-school.
I turned to Pinterest for additional inspiration and found myself drawn to retro ad designs from the 60s and 70s. The color combinations deep reds, blacks, warm neutrals and the use of aged paper textures really stood out. I decided to bring that same look and feel into my design, using it as the foundation for both the layout and visual direction.
For the content, I wanted to do more than just promote the product. So I included a mix of elements: a brand story, a cocktail recipe, a spotlight on their tattoos, and a callout for a themed event. This helped bring out different sides of Sailor Jerry’s personality, while keeping the viewer engaged throughout.
Design-wise, I experimented with retro-style fonts, tattoo flash artwork, and layout compositions that felt true to the time period. I even used AI tools like ChatGPT to help generate product visuals with a painted, vintage feel matching the overall style.
This project really helped me understand how to visually express a brand’s character while still being creative with format and storytelling. From research to final execution, I learned how to balance inspiration with originality, and I really enjoyed the process.
